Our Pastor

Angela Maddalone was installed as our pastor in January 2009. Raised in the Bronx as a Roman Catholic, Angela graduated from the College of Mt. St. Vincent with a B.S.N. in nursing and became a licensed Registered Nurse in 1982. She entered seminary as a second career student after many years of discernment following her decision to join the Presbyterian Church. She earned a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary (1998) and the Masters Sacred Theology with an emphasis in Social Ethics and Preaching from Union Theological Seminary (in 2008). She was ordained in 1999.

Angela is strongly committed to grounding all church activities and programs in solid theology and authentic spirituality.  As a strong believer that "worshipping our Creator creatively lifts our spirits as we open ourselves to the Divine Spirit", her approach includes integrating the arts into worship, preaching in partnership with the congregation and preaching for social transformation.  She has also led numerous workshops and retreats on spirituality and prayer throughout the presbytery.  Angela has a passion for children and youth.  She believes that "faith is caught not taught" and as children watch us "they internalize the God we serve."  Angela is most importantly the mother of two children, Joseph and Chelsea.  She enjoys relaxing with a good book, hanging out with friends or playing her guitar.  She also loves kayaking, playing tennis, and going to the movies and theater.

Our Parish Associate (CLP)

Henry M. Shaw joined the Palisades Presbytery Church in 1970, drawn to its social activism and community spirit.  His two sons, Chris and Mark, attended Sunday school.  His wife Suzanne, a professional singer, joined some years later and became a Deacon.  Henry has served on several presbytery committees including the Committee on Ministry.  He is presently Moderator of the Permanent Judicial Commission as well as member of the Committee on Preparation for Ministry.  Henry signed up to become a Commissioned Lay Pastor as soon as our Presbytery adopted the program.  His coursework took him to New York Theological Seminary, which proved to be a wonderful ecumenically, racially and socio-economically diverse experience.  Henry received a Master of Divinity in 2011—the oldest person at NYTS ever to receive an M.Div!  As a CLP Henry was co-pastor and then pastor at Central Presbyterian in Haverstraw and he recently retired as the Commissioned Lay Pastor at the Presbyterian Church of New Rochelle where he served for five years.  He retired in November 2012.

As Commissioned Lay Parish Associate (CLP) at Palisades Henry will focus on visitations to our homebound members and will lead worship on occasion. In addition to serving at Palisades, he is also the Copy Editor for a quarterly journal, The Living Pulpit.  Suzanne and Henry live with their cat Kasey in Old Tappan, NJ.  One of their great joys is their delightful new granddaughter, Dakota Rose!

Our Music Director and Organist

Michael ShapiroMichael Shapiro, together with his wife, Jennifer, has been a member of Palisades Church since 1965.  They both joined the choir that same year. Michael became organist and choir director in 2002.  Michael began the study of music at the age of five, becoming proficient enough as a pianist by the time he was ten years old to begin to think of a career as a concert pianist.  He became fascinated with organ music at the age of thirteen and would beg his parents to take him places where he could try out organs and practice on various instruments. He entered Columbia College in 1958 as a pre-med, but soon decided to switch his major to music. He studied composition with Otto Luening and Vladimir Useshevsky and conducting with Rudolf Thomas, former conductor of the Metropolitan Opera.  He continued his piano study with William Beller.  After getting his degree from Columbia, he decided to enter the field of writing music for television and film.  Together with Nat Levy, who would be his partner for over twenty years, he founded ServiSound Inc., which grew to be one of the largest and most successful recording studios in NYC.  Michael has composed scores for well over three hundred productions.  He sold ServiSound in 1999 and now spends his time working for our Church and still continues writing music scores for various film projects.  He has also written a number of choral works for Palisades.
